Cat Calling Reality

To the Editor:

I live in Tip Top Isles. I am an avid cat lover and have owned cats most of my life. I do not have any pets at this time due to the uncontrollable flea problem caused by the feral cat colony referred to in the August 10 "Letter to the Editor."

Six years ago I became aware of the spay/neuter program for feral cats. I thought, what a wonderful program. I even signed up to participate. Due to health problems I had to postpone my start date. Someone else started catching the cats. Unfortunately the colony did not appear to reduce in numbers. There are always the smart few that never got caught and produced kittens. Perhaps people with unwanted cats dropped them off in the colony. Maybe some stray cats joined the colony for a sustained food source. All I know is that the program did not work.

Many of the feral cats started hanging around my yard and reproducing behind my work shop.

Now that the colony has been removed, l am going to adopt a new domesticated kitten.

The people participating in the spay/neuter program should be required to keep the cats on their property for the duration of the cats lives.
