Wheels for Jay -- Matlacha benefit concert for local humanitarian Saturday

July 28, 2016
Melissa Schneider - Editor ( , Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Kip Lawrence is a well-known local songwriter and member of the popular Yard Dogs "Florida Swamp" band. His little brother, Jay, was rendered a quadriplegic at the age of 20, but he never let that slow him down. Jay founded his own charity called "Hands Up" and is also the founder and owner of a semi-pro local football team, the Florida Stingrays. He also sits on the board of Caleb's Crusade, a local non-profit that helps fund childhood cancer research.

"Jay needs our help because his handicap van is beyond repair, and these much-needed wheels are expensive," Kip said.

With that, a benefit concert has been organized in Jay's honor, called Wheels for Jay, taking place at Miceli's Waterfront Restaurant, 3930 Pine Island Road, Matlacha, Saturday, July 30, from noon to 4 p.m.

Performing that afternoon will include Pat McCune, a fingerstyle guitarist on 6- and 12-string guitars whose style of music is often called "folk with an attitude;" David Hintz, a well-traveled songwriter who livens up any atmosphere with quirky views on life; Bill Metts and his beautiful tunes and acumen on the acoustic guitar; and, of course, Kip, performing a set with his new, un-named band, consisting of Houseboat Jim Visone on banjo/guitar and Mecca Keener playing upright acoustic bass.

"Please help Jay become mobile once again while enjoying a one-of-a-kind musical line-up, along with the best menu of fresh seafood and Italian specialties to be found anywhere," Kip said. "Miceli's also offers a beautiful view of the water from an expanded tiki hut. This benefit is sponsored by Mojo Sound, Pine Island Printing and Miceli's Waterfront Restaurant."

For further information on the benefit, find the benefit page on Facebook by searching "Wheels for Jay Benefit Concert" or call Miceli's, 239-282-8233.
