A knack with a needle is a trait that runs in Lisa Miller's family.

She learned how to sew from her mother and grandmother, and worked in her uncle's sewing factory, Fountain Manufacturing, during the summers in high school before studying fashion design in college.

Now, at 49, Miller is living a designer's dream: she and her husband, Keith, opened a clothing and jewelry boutique on Fort Myers Beach in June.

Keith and Lisa Miller moved to Cape Coral in February looking for a change of scenery and lifestyle. They had no intentions of opening a business, but when Lisa Miller saw a “For Rent” sign on the beach, she was inspired.

"I like taking something - sketching it, making a pattern, sewing it up, and it looks just like I sketched it," Lisa Miller said. "That's pretty cool."

The store, Nautical Nook, is located on 1660 Estero Boulevard between Hooter's and the Fort Myers Beach Smoke Shop. Miller features her clothing line, Tattoo'd Dolls, as well as her custom-made jewelry. Her jewelry is nautical and clothing style is a pin-up style currently targeted at women around 20 to 35 years old. As the store picks up, she hopes to expand to include more menswhere and expand its demographic appeal.

Besides crafting her shirts, shorts and dresses on her 1930's Singer machine in the back of the store, Miller also embroiders designs on t-shirts and clothing items.

"We're more boutique than tourist-oriented," Keith Miller, 45, said.

The couple hopes to attract local residents to frequent their store and its unique styles. Lisa Miller takes custom clothing and jewelry orders.

Keith said many locals don't go to the local stores, especially during season, and they hope to change that and offer what the community might need.

"We're trying to listen to the locals and provide what they need," he said.

The couple moved to Cape Coral from Indiana in February after years of visiting family in the area. Keith, formerly an engineer, said he was tired of sitting behind a desk at a computer all day and the two were ready for a change.

They had no intentions of moving to Florida to open a store - it was a dream they'd discussed while living in Indiana, but one that had never come to fruition. The couple were driving down Estero Boulevard when Lisa happened to spot the for-rent sign in the vacant suite, formerly an ice cream shop.

"She said, 'should I call?'" he said. They did, and two months later, they were opening up shop.
