Booba's Bar -- Local couple opens all-new eatery on San Carlos Island

The small strip of San Carlos Island has been pretty quiet the last few years. There are some fun shops, a nice restaurant here and there, but not really too much else to do for the locals. When an opportunity was presented to longtime island resident Booba and his lovely wife, Windy May, they couldn't say no, completely renovating the 19001 San Carlos Blvd. establishment and opening Booba's Bar, a kickass little saloon and eatery offering food and drinks "somewhere on San Carlos Island."

"These guys have got the juices of San Carlos Island flowin' again," said local veterinarian and Booba's regular Sherwood Cooper, along with his wife, Vickie.

Other regular patrons of the bar feel the same as the Coopers, with Booba and Windy reawakening a livelihood that has been asleep on San Carlos Island for sometime. They've only been open a couple of months and already have a great following of friends and fans.

"It's really great energy. We had so many people coming by to help us renovate and build new furniture and tables the donations of artwork and furniture people would just come by and bring these really cool things everyone feels that it's their place and it is," Windy said. "I'm so excited that this is such a great neighborhood with great neighbors it's a locals' bar it's their bar."

"It really has been absolutely awesome. We have really good people/patrons, and everything has gone so smoothly," Booba said.

Walk in and you'll be greeted by friendly faces and a welcoming, light and bright atmosphere, a fresh breeze flowing through the establishment, and warm positive vibes floating from the front of the shop all the way to the back.

"We are kid- and family-friendly, pet-friendly, boat-friendly, biker-friendly, fisherman-friendly come by and you'll have a good time here," Booba said.

Take your pick of musical selections from the jukebox, and test your skill at the bowling and old-fashioned Multi-Cade arcade games. "and we plan to get more games in to play, because, really, I'm a large child,"?Windy laughed.

Four to five brews are flowing from the taps at any given time, with bottles also available, along with a nice selection of wine. Enjoy anything from Stella Artois, Twisted Tea and Angry Orchard to Corona, Old Milwaukee, Bud, Bud Light, Coors and others. And be sure to check out the $1.50 draft specials, offered weekly.

As for the food, if you've been on the island during a local benefit, you've probably had the opportunity to try some of Booba's BBQ. It is dynamite. Booba's been in the bar/restaurant business for 20+ years, and those skills certainly show on the grill and smoker.

Now you can get some of Booba's tasty treats any time during the week, with a varying menu that changes day by day, keeping it fresh and keeping it simple. Specials of the day may include pasta and meatballs, tacos, burritos, sausage and peppers, you never know.

Come by Friday and Saturday for great live music, from about 6 p.m. to 9ish, and Sunday is the time to enjoy a Big Booba BBQ cook-out celebration, where the eatery owners pull around their big smoker and serve up fresh pulled pork, BBQ chicken, smoked sausage and all the fixins, starting around noon, and plates going for about $5 to $7.

"We start serving at noon, but come early, because it sells out quick," Booba strongly encouraged.

He makes all of his BBQ hot sauces from scratch, and has as many as 12 available at once, featuring anything from Blueberry Bang, Cranberry Holidaze, Poppin' Pineapple, Screamin' Peach, Plum Grapezy and Honey Habanero Glaze. Either top your Booba's BBQ with any or all of these savory concoctions, or ask to take home a jar or two for your own home-cooked meals.

Hours to Booba's Bar are 9 a.m. to at least 10 p.m., maybe later depending on how busy it is, and the couple plans to offer a happy hour soon. Always doing their part to help the community, they are also eager to utilize their establishment for benefits, bike-run stops and non-profits in the future.

"We're definitely looking forward to helping out with local charities and fund-raisers," Booba said.
