Town to purchase new parking meters

The company that allowed Fort Myers Beach to use its parking meters on a trial basis starting last October wants the town to pony up.

"They're tired of us using them without compensation," said Town Manager Don Stilwell of POM Parking Meters.

On Monday, the Town Council approved the actual purchase of 75 meters at its beach-access pay stations for $48,750. The expense is part of the town's existing budget.

Prior to sampling the POM meters, the town used Duncan Meters but reported corrosion, low battery life and faulty card readers.

According to Scott Baker, the director of public works, the meters are capable of interacting with a smart-phone application that allows not only payment but the ability to communicate with the town's website to determine in advance what parking spots are open.
