Smokin’ in the Mangroves returns with a spark

February 25, 2016
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Santini Marina Plaza is getting warmed up for its annual Smokin' in the Mangroves barbecue event the largest Santini gathering of the year, taking place Saturday, March 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Barbecue competitors, masters and champions travel from all over Florida and Georgia to join in on this competition.

Local backyard teams will be competing head-to-head with the pros. It's sure to be another great event, as it's been in years past.

"Response from the vendors for the street market has, again, been overwhelming. We have quite a lineup of vendors, with lots of new and different participants," said Bonnie Roberts of Bonnie Roberts Events, lead coordinator of the event.

The Bugtussle Ramblers will be providing the bluegrass entertainment that day, and a panel of local island celebrity judges will decide who wins the top spot in a multitude of categories, including chicken, ribs and pork.

"All of the competitors will be vending their fantastic barbecue to all attendees," Bonnie said. "A trophy awards ceremony will take place at 2 that afternoon. The most coveted People's Choice Award is decided by the public, so be certain to sample the entries, come by the tent next to the Bluegrass stage to vote, and the People's Choice Award will be presented as the finale to a fun day at Santini Marina Plaza."

Anyone interested in volunteering during the event, to register as a participant or vendor, get in touch with Bonnie, 239-443-8810.
