Closing time of 11 p.m. a relief to neighbors

The parking-deficient downtown will get a boost in the form of a 27-space surface lot along Crescent Street.

On Feb. 16, the Fort Myers Beach Town Council unanimously approved the combining of two lots at 140 and 150 Crescent St., which currently serve occasionally as a temporary lot, into a permanent lot.

"Any additional parking in the central district is beneficial," said Bud Nocera, president of the Fort Myers Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. "Even 27 spaces can make a big difference."

This vacant lot along the canal side of Crescent Street will become a 27-space permanent parking lot.

The approval came easy, but what the town heard from property owner John Richard a month ago had both the council and neighboring residents nervous. He was asking for a lot that stayed open 24 hours a day and was also requesting that a third lot at the site be rezoned from residential multi-family to downtown commercial.

The lots sit along a canal, and across from it stand several single-family homes on Primo Drive. Residents voiced concerns about headlights shining on homes and the noise that comes with people leaving the lots in the wee hours of the night. Also, the rezoning request opened the door for most any type of future commercial development.

After speaking with neighbors, Richard dropped the rezoning request and limited the lot hours to 11 p.m.

"This is a great example of a business owner and a neighborhood working together toward a common goal," said Mayor Anita Cereceda at the meeting.

As for the new lot, among its buffers will be an 8-foot wall along the north side of the property, a 4-foot white picket fence along Crescent Street and 5 feet of landscaping along the canal.
