A wrinkle in time, plus wine

After-hours Botox party at Hot Heads a hit

There are after-hour parties where it's BYOB. How about one where it's BYOF - as in bring your own face?

Randi Ardente, owner of Hot Heads, has found a business niche that puts a little fun in a process that makes some a bit squeamish. For the past year, she has uncorked the wine and sliced up some cheese for a monthly Botox party and it's catching on. Thursday's gathering included 14 appointments for facial injections, and snowbird Mary Fran Kowalo was among them.

"Everyone's relaxed this way," said the resident of Wheeling, W. Va., as she sipped on some wine while waiting her turn on a comfy couch. "This is so much better than going to a clinic."

Angella Benson, right, prepares Mandy O'Connor of Cape Coral before providing a Botox injection in her forehead as a means of eliminating wrinkles.

Angella Benson, a certified nurse practitioner who provides the injections, has found getting away from her usually sterile environment a fun thing as well. It was her eighth visit to the salon on Thursday, and she was wearing a fashionable dress - looking nothing like a nurse.

"I used to wear scrubs," she said, "but that might have made people a bit uneasy. Now, I think of it as going to a party."

She recommends that those who are uncertain about the procedure attend a party and just socialize and watch the first time or two. It will ease their minds, she said.

"People don't want a surprise," Benson said. "They worry about getting a look that's an unnatural look. What they need to know is that this is a very natural and safe procedure and we always tailor it to the person."

Ardente shared laughs with her guests, keeping them relaxed and upbeat, despite the presence of needles entering people's faces just a few feet away. No one seemed fazed.

"This is a fun setting," Ardente said. "It doesn't feel or look like a doctor's office one bit. It's a party."
