Good support for solar energy

To the editor:

What a pleasure to see the large turnout for the San-Cap Solar Connect informational meeting sponsored by the Ding Darling Wildlife Society last week.

This initiative to encourage the installation of solar panels by making the cost more reasonable is highly commendable but we should also be asking ourselves why it is needed.

Here's why.

In the Sunshine State citizens are not allowed to buy solar power from anyone other than a state authorized electric utility company. You also cannot sell your surplus solar power to your neighbors. Most states do not restrict the buying and selling of solar power and so are way ahead of Florida in its development.

There is something we can do about this. Floridians for Solar Choice is proposing an amendment to the state constitution which would allow the sale of solar-generated electricity to Florida families and businesses by persons other than power companies and government-owned utilities.

If enough of us sign the petitions, the proposal will be on the November 2016 ballot, the wording has already been approved by the Florida Supreme Court.

But we need to act fast. The deadline for petitions is rapidly approaching. You can print up your own copy by going to www.FLsolarchoice.org, then mail it in, or stop by SCCF and ask for the petition.

There are only some 6000 customer-sited solar systems in the whole state of Florida, we can do better than that.

The League of Women Voters of Florida is supporting this citizens' initiative and urges you to help us make it happen.
