Do not take live shells

By Staff | Nov 5, 2015

To the editor:

Each year as the tourist season starts, I see people throwing live shells into water, and collecting live sand dollars or shells with sea animals in them on my daily beach walks! When I advise them that what they have is alive and that there is a fine, sometimes they are shocked, sometimes I’m ignored, sometimes they put them back.

However, it would surely help if the rental places would provide this information to their guests. Save the live shells, and educate the visitors who don’t know a live sand dollar from a dead one! If the beach established a volunteer group like our Turtle Time folks to warn or ticket tourists for taking the live shells, it would surely help!
