Membership fee needed back at Bay Oaks
To the editor:
I am a full time resident of Fort Myers Beach. When I read that the “powers that be” are considering closing Bay Oaks Recreation Center, I was appalled.
Bay Oaks is the life center of this community. It is a place full of activity, not only for children, but adults, both seasonal and full time residents. I am a senior and go to Bay Oaks three times a week. This is where I have made many lasting friendships. It is a gathering place for many people, and the town considering closing Bay Oaks is a disgrace. It is one place children can come to and be safe. Adults make use of many activities offered from early morning till closing. Seniors look forward to days we come together for Bocce Ball, Cards, Dominos, Mahjong and social activities.
If there are not enough funds to keep Bay Oaks open, consider charging a nominal membership fee. The staff has had events in the past to bring people together. Why not promote events as fundraisers. Advertise, promote a fundraiser for Bay Oaks. We will all come.
