For its sixth year, the Mermaid Lounge and its dedicated staff are eager to host the annual Walk the Walk for Breast Cancer, to help support the Lisabet Anna Buesing Angel Support fund, strutting down the boulevard Saturday, Oct. 17. The benefit will feature several nearby poker-run stops along the island (all well within walking distance), starting at The Mermaid, with registration at 10 a.m. and the walk kicking off at 11.

From there, benefit-walkers will swing by the Beach Pub, the Beached Whale, Lighthouse Tiki, and Yucatan Beach Stand where they'll get another card (or more) to add to their poker hand(s), as well as enjoy special celebratory games, food, specials, and/or prizes set up at each stop.

"We'll be at each stop for about 45 minutes to an hour, and each will be offering some type of special celebration for the benefit, whether it's happy hour prices, a special food spread, etc. as well as a 50/50 drawing at each stop," said Lena Neroni, lead coordinator of the annual benefit. "We'll all end up back at The Mermaid for more prizes, raffles, silent auctions, food, and to see who has the best (and worst) hand. We'll also have another special prize for the best/most fun dressed so don't forget to wear your pink and go all out!"

All about raising funds for the Lisabet Anna Buesing Angel Support Foundation, the annual Walk the Walk benefit is proud to continue to not only raise funds for this non-profit group, but to raise awareness, as well.

"This foundation is local taking care of Lee County men and women. It's not national, where funds cover presidential chairmen's salaries. It's local money used to help local people," Lena said. "Lisabet's little boy will be there, as well as her brother, mother and sister-in-law. We're sure to host the walk a little later in the morning, for those who also like participating in the breast cancer walk that takes place earlier at Tanger Outlets."

The cost to participate in the walk is $20, which gets you a commemorative shirt, bracelet and poker hand. Additional poker hands may be purchased for $10 a piece.

Lena jokes, "And for those bikers who can manage being away from their bikes for a few hours and walk with us we'd be happy to place pink bows on each of your bikes, set up in front of the Mermaid."

Shirts and other merchandise will be available for those who'd like to show their support in other ways, as well as plenty of raffle prizes awarded.

"I would like to thank all of the wonderful island businesses who have donated and/or participated in this benefit every year. This is one that no one ever says 'no' to. It really is awesome, and amazes me every year. All of the food for the buffet has been donated by area restaurants. When we first started the walk six years ago, 36 people participated. Last year, 100, and we hope to see even more come out this year. Thank you, all, so much," Lena said. "And this is open to all ages to everyone so come one, come all, and don't forget to show off and be pretty in pink feel free to go wild!"
