To the editor:

There was a great turnout for the Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. There were approximately 500 people that spectated the event. We had 15 participants between the 3 divisions.

The Kids division winner was Mark Allman from Fort Myers Beach who beat Talbot Taylor from Chevy Chase, Maryland in a one dog overtime eat-off after both finished the regulation time with 5 hot dogs consumed.

The Women's division was won by Whitney Smith from Kokomo, Indiana with a total of 5. The Men's division also saw an overtime period dog-off between Mike Hester from Cape Coral and reigning champion Bob Petcher from Fort Myers. Both men finished regulation time with 8, and Petcher narrowly won the one dog overtime tie breaker by a couple bites.

I would like to thank all participants, fans, staff and sponsors (Times Square Merchant Alliance and Southern Deli Provisions) for their hand in this event. We look forward to next year's competition.
