Bookstore

Volunteering in the store is a good opportunity to get to know titles and authors better, and chat with browsers who come to discover treasures. We are looking for someone who would be free one day a week from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Please fill out an application for bookstore volunteer and someone will call you to arrange training and details.

Interesting

I was initially surprised that record players were again on the market and attracting quite a few sales. What has been equally of interest are the number of records being sold. Vinyl sales are at their highest level in15 years.

Penguin Random House recently announced it had acquired world rights for two adult coloring books from Johanna Basford, the so-called queen of coloring. This is another sign that the demand for coloring books in the U.S. continues to surge. The trend seems to have begun in France where editorial teams deciding whether to publish or not needed to be clear on the main point of coloring as an adult. The team decided that coloring could help readers achieve well-being and meditate. Some credit the binding and overall design of the coloring books as boosting sales too. More publishers are coming on board as they discover that adults find coloring books appealing for relaxation and for individuals battling serious medical conditions.

Loved Ones/Special Event

Memorials in the amount of $25, $50, $75, $100, etc. can be made in honor of a loved one or to commemorate a special event. Acknowledgements are sent to the donor and can also be sent to the person/family remembered or honored. If you are very satisfied with the library's services, try to leave a donation in the donation box in the foyer or on the top of the stairs on the second floor. Even coins are welcome, and multiple hands and donors make a difference.

Knopf

Publishing house, Alfred A. Knopf celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Knopf is a respected, venerable literary publisher. They have published a wide variety of titles, and one can attest to their influence by the fact that we have at least 1,000 of their titles in our collection.

Merton

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of writer Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk. During his life, he produced a large volume of writings. Interest in his work seems greater than ever.

The Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky is home to more than 50,000 Merton items, including his correspondence, audiotapes of his conferences, books from his library, photographs and even watercolor paintings by his artist-father, Owen. More than 50 books related to Merton have been published in the past two years.

"It shows he still speaks powerfully to people and that we're still catching up with his thinking" says Paul Pearson, director and archivist of the Thomas Merton Center.

Check our catalog for Dialogues with Silence (Religion, Devotions Merton) and Intimate Merton: his life from his journal (Biography, BIO Merton). We are currently processing the audiobook Thomas Merton on Contemplation.

Books Growth

Life is fascinating. Case in point. In the late 1970's, Mitchell Kaplan dropped out of law school in our nation's capital with the dream of opening an independent bookstore in South Florida, where he grew up. After leaving law school, he started working at a B. Dalton bookstore in Florida, while pursuing English education. After teaching high school English for three years, he opened his first Books & Books location in Coral Gables in 1982. Since then and now 33 years later, Books & Books was named the 2015 Bookstore of the Year by Publishers Weekly. The bookstore has expanded its reach by opening shops in Miami Beach, the Bal Harbour Shops and in Miami as well as affiliate locations in Westhampton Beach, NY, the Cayman Islands and Miami International Airport.

"For me, bookselling is more about the journey than anything else," Kaplan says.
