Popeyepalooza seeking volunteers

May 14, 2015
Melissa Schneider - Editor (mschneider@breezenewspapers.com) , Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

As we near to the sixth annual Popeyepalooza benefit, taking place at the Beach Pub, 1668 I St., Sunday, June 7, starting at noon and going all day, founder and lead coordinator Mike "Popeye" Dearden is in dire need of volunteers to help out before, during and/or after the event. While he continues to take care of his own medical concerns, needing some recovery time (check out the $pinach for Popeye benefit on the following page), Popeye is seeking anyone interested in helping out however they can.

"I am extremely short on volunteers this year so far, and we'll need people to help in any of the following:?setup and breakdown of the benefit; shirt table volunteers, food table volunteers, grill volunteers, raffle volunteers and off-island campaigners."

Popeye has been so busy adding to the amazing roster of musicians, prizes and fun in store for his sixth annual benefit, raising funds for two island youth athletic venues: The Fort Myers Beach Soccer Club and the Beach Little League, we've had trouble keeping up with it all!?Since last week's printing, the fund-raising guru has managed to get the donations of prizes up to the $4,000 mark, and they keep rolling in.

"Mayor Anita Cereceda and her Times Square shop, Local Color, donated a beautiful, hand-made, hand-painted, gold-leaf gilded 3-foot tall Philippine St. Nicholas statue ($350 value)!" Popeye exclaimed. "A private contributor gave us a stylish Beach Cruiser bicycle ($300 value); 'Fiberglass' Bob and 'Shamrock' Mary Gutierrez donated an awesome Dell Latitude Laptop Computer with Windows 8.1, dual core processor, DVD burner, and more ($450 value); Matanzas Inn gave us a two-night stay to go along with their restaurant gift certificate ($230 value), and Key West Express sent us a round trip ticket ($125 value). I have also received an email from Cason Photography studios of Tampa. They are sending us three photography packages for the silent auctions each one worth $650! And that's just the tip of the iceberg, so bring your checkbooks for the silent auctions, folks!"

Along with this wealth of fantastic prizes available for winning during the many raffles and silent auctions that day, this year's festivities will include live music throughout the day with Sean Bright, Anthony Wayne, Tommy V and the John Allender Blues Band.

Also be sure to take part in the 50/50s, and if you don't scoop up a plate (or two) of Popeye's legendary barbecue meal, featuring smoked savory goodness cooked up by Chef Pop, himself, along with is trusty sidekicks, you're missing out!
