Friday, April 24, 10:30 a.m. Poetry Stage with Rick

The movie for April 22, "Young at Heart," is directed by Stephen Walker. One gets a good feel during the movie for what the group that is being focused on encounters. The climax is a triumphant performance that is well worth viewing and hearing.

The Poetry Stage with Rick on April 24 is facilitated by Rick Sebastian, local resident and performer, who will share a variety of selections and also invite those attending to share a favorite. This is a time to celebrate the month of April devoted to poetry--both favorite works by others and some samples that you have tried on your own.

Book Discussion

Book Discussion members met this past week and had an interesting discussion of Jojo Moyes' Me Before You. It was fascinating to see how readers followed the development of characters, particularly Lou and Will.

Next month's discussion will center on Cross Creek by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Decisions were also made for the selections to be read and discussed in June and July. They are: June: Orphan's Inheritance by Aline Ohanesian; July: Whiskey and Charlie by Annabel Smith. Both of these new additions are debut novels receiving attention by a fair number of book discussion groups across the U.S.

Generosity Island

As you enter the front doors, you may notice the darker area on one side of the foyer and stairs to the first floor. This part of the wall was prepared so that the wall would be perfectly smooth and ready to accept a canvas in the coming weeks. An underwater scene will adorn this area called "Generosity Island." Posted photos in the entry foyer give you some idea of what will transpire.

Bookstore Volunteers

Beachcomber Books, the bookstore by the Friends of the Library, on the third floor, is in need of two volunteers to enable us to keep a full schedule of open hours for the summer. If you can assist between now and October, please fill out a Volunteer--Bookstore application at the Staff Assistance station on the first floor. You will be called to arrange training and schedule hours. The need is for one 4-hour shift each week. Thank you for helping.

Karen Kingsbury has charted new territory by melding fictional storytelling with bible study. Her "The Family of Jesus" (Religion, Christianity, Kingsbury) isn't a novel; it's a series of six stories about biblical figures close to Jesus.

Read During the Summer

The tendency to lose reading skill during the summer has garnered attention with the message about the importance of reading during the summer. New research from Reading Is Fundamental has shown that children in poverty and in low-income families lose more than two months of reading skills.

Chefs Helping Home Cooking

We've noticed a twist on the genre of the chef cookbook. Rather than creating restaurant dishes, chefs are sharing their secrets for cooking at home. Consider these examples to get started: The Paleo Approach by Jill Bauer, Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood (641.59), The Pioneer Woman Cooks: food from my frontier and Recipes from an Accidental Country Cooking, both by Ree Drummond and found at 641.597 DRU.

One of the biggest trends in cookbooks has nothing to do with food at all, but with drink. There are many books about drinks. To get started, consider 100 Smooth Smoothies & Juices (641.34 ONE), The Bartender's Companion to 750 Cocktails (641.874 WAL), Drink to Your Health (Health, Health Diet, McIntyre), Cynthia Clarke's 60 Smoothie Sensations (641.875 CLA), Delicious Drinks (641.2 DEL), The Everything Healthy Green Drinks Book (Health Diet Brandon) and Miracle Juices (641.875 YAB).

The Who and What of Cookbook Sales

Four percent of spending on cookbooks is by those ages 13-17, 22 percent by those ages 18-29, 29 percent by those 30-44, 17 percent by ages 45-54, 17 percent by those aged 55-64 and 12 percent by those 65 and older.

Library Hours

When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; on Wednesday between 9 and 7, and on Saturday between 9 and 1. We look forward to seeing you.
