What Does Florida's Future Hold?

Dr. David Colburn will discuss how Florida has grown and what the future may hold in store as America's third largest state. This event, at 7 p.m. on March 9, is sponsored by the Estero Island Historic Society in the library's Community Room even though the Library Proper is closed.

Colburn has dedicated his career to understand modern Florida. He is a native New Englander, a Vietnam veteran and a University of Florida historian, dean and provost. His writings include Florida's Gubernatorial Politics in the 20th Century, Florida Megatrends, and From Yellow Dog Democrats to Red State Republicans.

Book Sale

We were delighted with the many who participated in last Saturday's booksale. We took to heart the satisfied comments and notes of gratitude. The next booksale will be in the parking garage on March 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Ukrainian Eggs

Eggs decorated in the Ukrainian style follow a process where each egg is written on and the design planned, often with many pencil points, before any dyeing or wax is put on the egg. The Ukrainian word for writing is pysanky which is why Ukrainian egg decorating is called pysanky.

A demo of how an egg is prepared and how it is written in steps will be shown on March 10. Included will be tips to keep in mind as you consider this writing, or have a better appreciation of what goes into this art.

Volunteers

We are seeking volunteers to assist in greeting library users. One advantage is that you get to know the library quite well, and also come to enjoy many of the library patrons and users. Check with Angie regarding available openings and days. It's a four-hour slot one day a week. This can be done for just a few months if desired.

The same is true for assisting in Beachcombers Books, the Friend's bookstore on the third floor. We need people to help staff the store and keep the doors open. Shifts are either 9 to 1 or 1 to 5. Leave a note for Pat and she'll call you or send an e-mail to beachfriends@comcast.com and one of the Friend's will get in touch with you.

Loved Ones/Special Event

Memorials in the amount of $25, $50, $75, $100, etc. can be made in honor of a loved one or to commemorate a special event. Acknowledgements are sent to the donor and can also be sent to the person/family remembered or honored. If you are very satisfied with the library's services, try to leave a donation in the donation box in the foyer or on the top of the stairs on the second floor. Even coins are welcome, and multiple hands make a difference.

Library Hours

When you call 765-8162 or 765-8163 during closed hours, a message gives the open hours. Open hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5p.m.; Wednesday 9 to 7; and Saturday 9 to 1.
