Book sale

Saturday, Feb. 21 is the occasion of The Friends of the Library book sale. Prices are minimal and there is much to look over. The sale takes place in the Library garage starting at 9:30 a.m. and going 'til 12:30 p.m. Give yourself time to browse.

The Friends are in particular need of a few people to assist in setting up on Friday, Feb. 20, between 1 and 4 p.m., and for putting everything away on Saturday, Feb. 21, between 1 and 3 p.m. If you can assist, please send an email to beachfriends@comcast.net or call 765-8162 and leave your name and number. In both cases, we'll confirm and be happy you can assist during these few hours.

Louise Now & Upcoming

This month artist of the month exhibition P (People Parade Paradise) is on display. The works by Louise Michaud do remind one of the interesting people that make up the local populace.

Important to note: Louise will have a live model on Tuesday, March 10, starting at 11 a.m. She will first do a portrait drawing, followed by a painting of the model. Observe the process and the dynamics of this creative enterprise.

Reschedule

Those who missed "The Price of Paradise" with Nick Penniman, author of Nature's Steward can be happy to note that the presentation is rescheduled for Wednesday, March 25, at 1:30 p.m.

Documentaries

Two special notes regarding well researched stories are scheduled this week. First, on Feb. 18, at 1:30 p.m., meet documentary filmmaker John Biffar as he presents a personal showing of The Queen of Swing. Second, on Feb 19, WGCU's Barbara Linstrom will present The History and Biology of Pink Gold. Both of the works promise to provide much for reflection and stimulation.

Make the Discovery

There is always something new to be found at the Beach Library. Some regular users know just how to keep up and are quite adept at locating materials. Others need assistance and have yet to learn how to discover the many treasures a public library has. We added 347 new print books, 184 new e-books, and 108 new DVDs during the month of January,

Special Thanks

We treasure the thoughtfulness and help of residents and snowbirds. In recent months, we'd had volunteers who have done cleaning in the library, and assisted in landscape upkeep or adopted a project for a few weeks. Thank you for your kindness and for making a point of letting us know of your schedule and availability.

Memory Screenings

We have received multiple notes of gratitude for having memory screenings. They are scheduled again on March 17, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. It is necessary to pre-register for the 15-20 minute session.

Memory screenings are a significant first step toward finding out if a person may have a memory problem. When the screening is done, some recommendations or suggestions are also shared with you.

Early recognition of mild cognitive impairment--mild memory loss that may eventually lead to dementia--provides an opportunity for healthcare professionals to treat this condition, and possibly slow down the changes in memory and other thinking skills.

Busy & Courteous

Thank you for your patience and courtesy to staff and fellow patrons of the library. Last month we had 24,554 people using the library in person so there are times when one must wait a bit to check out materials, or seek a parking space. We found 5 percent more people using us during January than did in the same month last year.

We welcome those who are renewing their membership or getting involved in the library for the first month. We issued 272 new cards during January.

Library Hours

When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; on Wednesday between 9 and 7; and on Saturday between 9 and 1. We look forward to seeing you.
