Writing Class, facilitated by Corinne Thwing, is an opportunity to meet other writers, get guided practice in a small-group context, and get good control over strategies for writing.

Special Saturday Event

Facilitated by Jeanie London, take in this hands-on demo on how to create holiday decorations with shells. There are both practical examples and ones that get into the festivities of the holiday season. Pre-register and $5 materials fee.

Thought to Ponder

Books are no more threatened by Kindle than stairs by elevators. Quote attributed to Stephen Fry.

Cafe'/Bookstore

Cafe' is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Beachcombers bookstore in the Library Commons is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this week.

The Ukraine

Many Americans feel for the Ukrainians who see their country torn apart by fighting and forces outside their border. Philip and Carol Arnold spent time in the Peace Corps in the Ukraine. What does their interaction with the Ukrainians tell about recent developments in the Ukraine and the Crimean Peninsula?

Story of Estero

Sponsored by the Estero Island Historic Society, Marlene and Pamela Fernandez will be the keynote speakers on Monday, Nov 10 at 7 p.m. Though the Library Proper is closed, the Library Commons is open for this talk and discussion.

To Be Continued

Those who participated in one or both of The Moth presentations in the Community Room during October gave high praise to the experience. Stay tuned. More Moth stories will be forthcoming in the coming months.

Intriguing

There are so many interesting facets in life that one can see something exciting in almost every direction. Case in point. I, at times, wonder at the proverb, "the more things change, the more they stay the same." The proverb was used by the French novelist Alphonse Karr and also by George Bernard Shaw in his 1908 "Revolutionist's Handbook." What draws my recalling of the proverb?

I noticed about two or three years ago that Books A Million was adding a line of record players in their stores. More recently Target added a few models in their stores. In recent reports, vinyl records are back. In fact, sales of vinyl records are up a projected 38 percent in 2014, according to Digital Music Sales. And sales in 2013 were up over 30 percent from the previous year.

Jack White, a member of the duo The White Stripes, who enjoyed success during the early 2000s indie rock revival, sold 40,000 copies of his new album on vinyl in one week, the most for any vinyl record since 1991. Amazon lists the vinyl LP.

Kickstarter

Kickstarter is a global platform, based in the United States, to help bring creative projects to life. It has received over $1 billion in pledges to funds projects which include films, comics, journalism, video games, music and food-related projects. The rationale for the project goes back to the community model where artists would go directly to their audiences to fund their efforts.

This online program started in 2009 and added an app for the iPhone in 2013. In 2012, they opened projects to ones based in the United Kingdom, in 2013 to projects based in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and this year to projects based in Norway.

Above I mentioned the proverb "the more things change, the more they stay the same." Last year on Kickstarter, board games out-performed video games in the monetary realm. People invested more than $52 million to help bring to market analog games made largely out of cardboard, while digital games attracted $45 million.

Hours

When we are closed a recorder gives the hours we are open. When open, we answer the phone in person. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday 9 to 7; and Saturday 9 to 1. All gates close when the library closes. We look forward to seeing you.
