Cafe'

The Cafe' reopens Monday, Oct. 6.

Upcoming

Amendment 1 is on the November 4, 2014 ballot in the state of Florida as an initiated constitutional amendment. The measure, upon voter approval, would dedicate 33 percent of net revenues from the existing excise tax on documents to the Land Acquisition Trust Fund. Jeremy Frantz with The Conservancy of Southwest Florida will be in on Oct. 10 to provide details of the amendment and lead discussion.

Special Presentation

A project called The Moth has delighted many listeners across the USA. This is a project that started when novelist George Dawes Green shared stories during a gathering on the porch. It produced a book by the same name and also Public Radio Hour has shared many presentations and stories. Some of these stories, in either video or audio, will be shared in the Community Room on both Oct. 14 and 28.

eBooks

After 14 days, eBooks automatically expire. However, you may want to return an eBook before it expires so that you can check another one out. This is really easy to do. If you use the OverDrive app on a tablet, iPad, or Kindle Fire, go to your OverDrive Bookshelf and hold your finger down on the cover. You will see an option to return the eBook. For Nook users who use Adobe Digital Editions, right click on the cover within ADE. For standard Kindle users with a black and white display, use the "Actions" button from within the "Manage Content & Devices" section of your account on Amazon.com.

Mobile Devices

Predictions of the end of the book with the pervasive presence of mobile devices are heard from time to time. The response is predictable. We are finding that as wonderful as eBooks can be, they are not an all-consuming transition for readers. Radio lives on despite TV and film is still in high demand despite DVDs and streaming videos. We also are finding that those who are the highest users of eBooks also continue to be avid print readers.

Thought

"Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul. -- Joyce Carol Oates.

Magazines

With your library card, you can access current and past issues of many popular newspapers and magazines online for free through the Florida Electronic Library database. Read complete editions of the New York Times from 1985 to the present, or peruse popular magazines such as Newsweek, Motor Trend, Prevention, and many more. To learn how to access these resources, go to our web site at www.fmb.lib.fl.us . Navigate to "E-Resources" in the menu near the top of the page, and then click "Magazines & Newspapers."

Great Libraries Foster Locating Treasures

Innovative libraries constantly strive to offer as many conduits of information and ways of locating treasures as possible. This summer staff have been working on the non-fiction collection, color coding each collection and instead of using numbers, putting in subjects. Its aim is to make it easier to browse and locate treasures you would not otherwise find.

Volunteer

We need a volunteer to do cleaning and/or vacuuming in the library. Time can be arranged most times that work very well with your schedule. See me for details.

Library Hours

When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; on Wednesday between 9 and 7; and on Saturday between 9 and 1. We look forward to seeing you.
