Raising awareness for Cystic Fibrosis while raising funds for a local employee's family in need, the SandBar and Grill, 7205 Estero Blvd., in the Santini Marina Plaza, will be hosting a very special benefit Saturday, Sept. 20, from noon to 8 p.m.

The SandBar assistant manager Talita Dutra's cousin, only 25 years old, recently passed away from the disease, and her family has been struggling ever since.

"It's been really tough. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects your lungs and digestive system, with 30,000 people in the U.S. diagnosed every year 70,000 in the world,"?Talita said. "It doesn't get better, unless you get a lung transplant, and for my cousin, it was too late. My family is going through a very, very tough time right now. Living in Brazil, it's tough to get a job when you're older to try to cover the bills."

To help Talita's family, the SandBar is hosting this special benefit Saturday to raise funds that will get them through this tough time.

"Plans have been coming along very well. We've been busy getting it all set up and looking very pretty," Talita said. "We're going to have BBQ platters that day, lots of raffles, the college games playing on the TVs and the Don Julio girls representing the brand with tequila samples and merchandise."

Several local businesses came together to offer special items for the raffle prizes, from hotel stays and gift certificates to to restaurants, to golf bags, beer-branded merchandise and more, with the grand prize being a 51-inch flatscreen TV.

"We've also made nice gift baskets to raffle off, as well ?a beach basket, liquor basket and others," Talita said.

Enjoy happy hour from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day, featuring discounted prices on domestic bottled beer, domestic drafts and house wine and liquor, along with special barbecued platters, with all proceeds going to Talita's family.

Going perfectly with happy hour, barbecued platters for $10 a plate will be offered, featuring ribs, chicken, corn on the cob, baked beans and all the trimmings, with all proceeds going to the assistant manager's family.

"Everyone has been helping me so much with this, as far as getting items for the raffle, helping out and spreading the word. The restaurant is really, really helping me out, as well. Thanks so much to everyone for doing so much to help my family."

"We're doing whatever we can do to help out while also raising awareness of the disease," said the SandBar and Grill general manager Krysten Williamson. "Talita has been here for several years, and everyone within our beach community has been very supportive of her, so everyone has been offering what they can to help out."
