Local blues sensation Marty Stokes and his Marty Stokes Band of musical legends perform around town virtually every weekend. As publicity of their talent expands, so does their schedule of gigs around town. A top-notch award-winning group for several years now, the award-winning blues band received quite an honorable request several weeks ago when asked to perform as the host band for the South Florida Blues Society's annual Guitar Showcase, taking place at the Funky Biscuit, Boca Raton, Sunday, May 25.

"It is an honor to get to rub elbows with some of the best blues guitarists in South Florida," Marty explained.

The band has participated in the Blues Society's International Blues Competition (IBC) for two years now, last year receiving the People's Choice award for their performance.

"We recently released a new album, and I was sure to send a copy to Blues Bobby, the founder of the South Florida Blues Society. I've performed on the other coast many times before with the society, and it's always a blast. Usually the Guitar Showcase host band is the winning group from the previous year's IBC, but as that band couldn't make it this year, and with Blues Bobby hearing our latest album, he invited us to be this year's host band. That really meant something to me," Marty said.

The Sanibel resident and blues man is the only west-coast guitarist who's been invited to perform as a spotlight guitarist during the previous east-coast blues society venues, and it means even more to him that he and his band were invited as the host group this year.

The Marty Stokes Band will open the show with their own set around 3 p.m. that day at the Funky Biscuit. After that, about eight to 12 guitarists will be showcased, each playing about three or four songs, as Marty's band plays all types of blues and funk to get the crowd moving.

"It's a lot of fun, playing it and hosting it, backing up pretty famous guitar players who have made it in the blues world. The Funky Biscuit is a crazy fun venue," Marty eagerly stated. "And our saxophonist, Jennifer Mazziotti, really burns the place down with her saxophone skills."

The band has been playing more and more national venues lately (including the Tangerine Blues Festival in Gulfport/St. Pete area coming up in September) as well as several local hot spots around town, such as Space 39 downtown, George & Wendy's on Sanibel and Bert's Bar in Matlacha. The group is also eager to come out with its second studio album, "Leavin' Blues," featuring 13 tracks of mostly original blues, along with one or two great covers of some of the greatest blues musicians of all time, available for sale at any of their gigs, and on their website,
