To the editor:
Along with many others, I attended the Workshop for the redesigning of Estero Boulevard. I could hardly believe that no attention had been paid to the easing of traffic flow! What is the purpose of a road? It is to move along traffic. So why propose to spend mega millions on cosmetics? Pretty is nice, but if a road does not move traffic it is a waste of money and time.
When I asked a Department of Transportation representative why there was no plan to use Seafarers' Mall to separate off-island traffic from on-island traffic, he said Seafarers' was not quite big enough. So I suggested that a piece of the almost derelict Helmerich Plaza was bought. That would be expensive. Well, the whole project is VERY expensive. It would be foolish to ruin the purpose of the whole expensive enterprise through hesitating to buy an extra bit of property.
When I asked whether a pull-off point was planned at every trolley stop, I was told that that would be "difficult." I have no doubt that it will be difficult, but I think it must be achieved.
Did the organizers of the workshop think that the Fort Myers Beach residents would come to the workshop, say "don't the palm trees looks nice" and go home happy? Please don't let them get away with that! Make your voice heard at the Town Hall and with the County Commissioners and officials at Lee County Department of Transportation!
