BikeWalkLee official applauds Town’s effort
To the editor:
Kudos to the Fort Myers Beach Town Council for unanimously adopting the recommendations of its pedestrian safety task force. This task force was set up after a pedestrian was killed last winter near one of the busy intersections on Estero Boulevard.
At the Oct. 1 meeting of the Town Council of Fort Myers Beach, members of the Town’s Public Safety Task Force presented their recommendations to Town Council. Council members unanimously adopted the recommendations and approved the expenditure of $30,000 for safety enhancements.
The task force made recommendations in four areas: lighting, crosswalks, signs and education. The recommendations included the following:
– Remove unnecessary and duplicative signs.
– Adjust crosswalk locations and/or street lighting to provide illumination of crosswalks on Estero Boulevard.
– Install a guardrail and new sidewalk segment near CVS and Villa Santini Plaza at Lenell Road and Estero Boulevard.
– Install “Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons” near Holiday Inn/Estero Cove and Estero Beach and Tennis Club.
– Provide three across-the-road banners indicating Fort Myers Beach is a “Pedestrian Safe” community! or “Look, Cross, Live.”
– Brochures providing community outreach on websites of Town, FMB Fire department, LCSO.
– FMB Pedestrian Safety Day in January or February 2013.
– Glow-in-the-dark wristbands provided at hotels, Town Hall, condos, etc. for evening/nighttime use.
Thanks to the members of the Town’s Public Safety Task Force for their work in developing these recommendations and to the Town Council for adopting them. We look forward to seeing these improvements installed in the coming months.
