Beach artist strives for contest winning

By Staff | Jul 18, 2012

Beach resident Elizabeth D’Onofrio Halladay has an opportunity “to create a powerful positive change in her own life or in the lives of others” as one of 15 finalists from more than 500 people nationwide to win a $30,000 grand prize in the StriVectin “The Power to Change” Contest.

Halladay, who was deeply involved in the recent Fort Myers Beach Film Festival as artistic director, decided to enter a contest she read about online in hopes of winning and fulfilling her dream of jumpstarting a film commission in the Fort Myers Beach area.

A good chunk of the contest rules centers on answering a question and, if chosen as a finalist, being able to provide a video to support the answer. The question: What would you change with $30,000?

“After the last film festival, a representative from Screen Actors Guild told me that I should start a film commission in the area. So, I decided to do some research on it and found the contest in an ad during my research,” said Halladay. “So, I wrote an essay, posted it on Facebook and ended up getting a lot of votes.”

A local film producer, moviemaker and longtime professional actress, Elizabeth stated she would like to “entice filmmakers from around the globe to film here on our beautiful beaches and interesting landscapes of Southwest Florida” to improve tourism from an artistic standpoint. If she wins, she hopes to create jobs for fellow artists and begin a home studio for the film commission.

“This will not only create jobs for people in the area but will also bring many more tourists to our island and surrounding areas all year round,” she said.

After the essay and received votes, Halladay was notified she was a finalist and told she had two weeks to submit a video about her project. She had from June 13 to June 27 to do so.

Now that she has fulfilled the contest requirements and has a chance to win the grand prize, she is in need of your continued voting. Those who wish to support Halladay should watch her public video at www.strivectin.com/powertochange/?x=us_showcase22_2713_31 and click on the vote button by the bottom of page. The winner is based solely on the number of votes received (after verification) from July 9 through July 25. He or she will be notified soon after and contest, while the results are expected to be announced on Aug. 1.

Halladay has volunteered in her field for many years by being active in creating and supporting the arts on Fort Myers Beach through The Beach Arts Cooperative. The not-for-profit organization has supported theatrical performances, been instrumental in bringing back the Fort Myers Beach Film Festival from a hiatus and created film, dance and art projects for the children on the Island.

‘I am always volunteering to do things for my art,” she said. “I just always love being around films and filmmakers. I also love this Beach and would like to see it thrive.”
