Lee County officer to engage in “Walk for the Fallen”

April 10, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Three weeks from today, a sergeant with the Lee County Sheriff's Office begins an ambitious effort to raise awareness, and funds, for the families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Sergeant David Drum plans to raise the money one step at a time, by walking and running 390 miles from the Lee County Sheriff's Office to the State Capitol Building in Tallahassee. The pledges Sergeant Drum receives for the Walk for the Fallen will go directly to Concerns of Police Survivors, an organization that helps the children and families of fallen officers through grief counseling, scholarship opportunities and much more.

The year 2011 saw an increase in violence toward officers across the country with 177 officers killed in the line of duty. At least 265 children were left behind by the violence, some too early to have a memory of their fallen parent. Sergeant Drum says citizens can step up and become heroes to these families by sponsoring and supporting the cause.

Walk for the Fallen departs from the Lee County Sheriff's Office (14750 Six Mile Cypress Parkway) on April 25, and arrives at the State Capitol Building in Tallahassee on May 4. You can support C.O.P.S. and the families of the brave men and women who gave their lives by mailing a donation to: Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc., P.O. Box 3199, Camdenton, MO 65020. Please write "Walk for the Fallen" on the memo line. For more information, you can go to www.Facebook.com/walkforthefallen.

An Art auction will also raise money for the cause. The Art auction will be held today (April 4), from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Caribbean Homes, 13261 McGregor Boulevard, Fort Myers (next to the Melting Pot). The silent art auction will feature paintings, ceramics, jewelry, quilts, copper art as well as chances to bid on hotel stays, gym memberships, an exclusive shopping experience at Chico's and more.
