FMPD: Tip leads to arrest of Cape man

March 27, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

A Cape Coral man was arrested and charged Monday after police received information that he may attempt to rob a jewelry counter at a store.

William Graham, 31, of 1207 N.E. Pine Island Lane, was picked up at a Kmart in Fort Myers on a warrant issued on March 8 for a violation of probation. He was sentenced Sept. 30 to six months of probation for a petit theft charge.

According to officials, the Fort Myers police received information through Crime Stoppers from an anonymous tipster on Sunday. The tipster reported that Graham may try to rob the Kmart at 3853 Cleveland Ave. on Monday.

FMPD notified the store manager and provided a photo of Graham, who is allegedly known to police. Detectives then set up surveillance at the store.

At 11:48 a.m., Graham entered the Kmart and walked around before heading for the jewelry counter. He waited for a few minutes, then left the store. Officers detained him and a records check revealed the outstanding warrant.

He was taken into custody and transported to the Lee County Jail.

It was unclear Tuesday if Graham remained in jail or if he had a bond.

"This is what happens when citizens get involved with law enforcement," Police Chief Doug Baker said in a prepared statement. "I am so proud of our officers ability to take proactive measures and keep the community safe because a citizen took the time to call in a tip."
