Praise goes to watchdog residents

March 14, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To The editor:

Kudos and thanks to Jim Stevens and Peter Reid. Jim and Peter have spent many hours during the past two years illuminating how, unbeknownst to almost all Fort Myers Beach residents, the Fort Myers Library Board of Directors raised $9 million adding 18,000 square feet to our library.

The 16,000-square foot facility was already rated twice the size considered exemplary by Florida Library Association Standards for Florida Public Libraries. The Beach Library board raised these millions without taking the expansion to the voters by referendum; attempts for them to take a brief time-out to obtain voter input before signing the construction contract fell on deaf ears. Considering the referendum for $7 million for a new Fort Myers Beach Town Hall was recently defeated by more than a 7 to 1 margin, we're disappointed, but not surprised. The Beach Library board resisted obtaining voter input.

Jim and Peter have been active in writing letters to the editor and providing public comment at Library Board, FMB Town Council, and Lee County Commissioners' meetings. And now they'll be running for two seats on the Library Board to make sure voters' interests are considered and prudent financial practices are followed.

We wish them success!
