Historic society hosts author at monthly meeting

February 10, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Author Mary Kaye Stevens will be the February speaker at the Estero Island Historic Society public meeting at St. Raphael's Parish Hall (5601 Williams Drive) on Monday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. Please join us for a fascinating glimpse into our island's history by this talented author.

Mary Kaye Stevens will speak about the process of researching and writing her just-published book, Fort Myers Beach, written in collaboration with the Estero Island Historic Society. EIHS Board member and life-long local resident A.J. Bassett was instrumental in making sure Mary Kaye had access to archives, locations and information essential to the book.

"A.J. and I were very much a team," noted Mary Kaye.

Copies of the book Fort Myers Beach will be available for sale during the Feb. 13 event. The book and its author attracted dozens of people to the Seven Seas, also known as the Newton House, for a book-signing event on Jan. 7.

Fort Myers Beach is the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing's popular Images of America series. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images and memories of days gone by. This is Mary Kaye's third book in the series. She also wrote Pine Island, published in 2008, and Lee County Islands in 2009.

"When I was doing research for Lee County Islands, which included a chapter on Fort Myers Beach, I discovered that this is such a different island," said the author. "It truly has a unique history."
