By Dr. Leroy Hommerding , Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Weekly Activities

Preschool Story Hour at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30

Cardmaking via Embossing class on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 10:30 a.m.

Upcoming

Missing a loved one during the holidays? Consider participating in the session "Grief During the Holidays" on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 10:30 a.m. for inspiration and insights.

Writing sessions continue Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Pets

Those who care for their cat or dog, or enjoy the world of pets, or are thinking about a pet addition or adoption are encouraged to check out the many titles in our collection on dogs and cats. To get started consider "Natural Pet Cures" (636.089 HEI), "ASPCA Complete Guide to Pet Care" (636.088 CAR), "277 Secrets Your Cat Wants You to Know Revised" (636.8 COO), "50 Games to Play with Your Cat" (636.808 STR), "A Dog's Book of Truths" (636.7 LEV) and "Dogs and Cats" (J636.7 JEN).

Also, during the month of December, you can participate in the Pet Food Drive, with a container at the front desk. Every year during the month of December, the non-profit Find A Home, Give A Home sponsors a pet food drive. Drop off cat food-wet or dry--and dog food or cat or dog toys. The purpose of Find A Home, Give A Home is to offer spaying and neutering, vaccinations and help to cats and dogs in need on Fort Myers Beach and San Carlos Island, and to give our furry friends the opportunity to find a home forever.

Beachcombers

Made up of individuals who have foresight and energy in terms of moving library plans forward, these volunteers look to setting up events that enable more in the community to get involved in making gifts to the library possible. These gifts enhance the collection, enable us to explore equipment options and provide special services and programs. If you'd like to join with this group, which will meet in a few weeks, drop an email with your contact info to Beachfriends@comcast.net or leave your name and phone number at the front desk or talk with me.

Construction

Progress continues with the first floor of the expansion going in place. As soon as this floor is finished, the blocks for the walls of the second floor will be set. You can likely notice some changes each time you drive by.

The highest beam will be raised in early January, which means the floors and walls of the expansion will be finished by then. We are busy spending time reviewing the final details, as those decisions must be made months in advance. Will share details for the topping ceremony shortly.

Thank you for your continued good will. I am delighted to hear the comments being shared with staff and have enjoyed the times at the model highlighting the features and services that are going to be possible with this improvement. Like many in the community, we look forward to the day in 2012 when all is complete!

Phone

We have received some comments that calls to 765-8162 at times seem to get a busy signal. At times we know we are busy. At other times it could be the circuit. As there's not a pattern that can be observed, it's hard to figure out what is happening. If you try the 8162 number and get repeated busy signals, then try 765-8163 and ask the person to transfer your call to circulation. If you're calling for information or Internet, then you're at the right number already.

Library Hours

Call for information. When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, which would be mentioned on the recorder, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5, and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
