Fall Programs at the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve

Fort Myers, FL – Immerse yourself in nature this fall at the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve. Staff and volunteers will offer a wide variety of programs for the public. Opportunities to explore nature on the boardwalk include daily Guided Walks, monthly Moon Walks, a Native Plant Uses Walk and an Intro to Birding Walk. Other activities include a Photo Contest, a Pine Needle Basket Making Class, a Tracking Club and an Alligator Detectives Program. See below for more details and get outside!

Guided Nature Walks

Daily (7days a week)

9:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m.

Daily Guided Nature Walks begin November 1st at 9:30 a.m. as visitors stroll along our fully accessible raised boardwalk trail with an experienced Volunteer Naturalist. Walk is 90 minutes long and travels of a mile. Tour is free with paid parking of $1 per hour per vehicle. No reservations are necessary and no groups of 8 or more. Walks occur 7 days a week.

Photo Contest

November 1st February 1st

Pick out your favorite Slough photos and enter them into our photo contest beginning November 1, 2011. All entries must be submitted by February 1, 2012. Awards will be presented at a reception held at the Slough on Saturday, February 25, 2012 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Winners will be announced at 11 a.m. Contest rules and entry forms are available at the Interpretive Center desk or online at www.sloughpreserve.org.

Full Moon Walk

Thursday, November 10th from: 5:457:15 p.m.

Friday, December 9th from: 5:30 7:00 p.m.

Experience the Slough in a new light-the light of the full moon, as visitors enjoy a guided sensory walk. Listen for some of the night life, smell night fragrances and get a new perspective of the Slough. Experienced Volunteer Naturalists lead small groups around the trail for this walk. The fee is $5 per person aged 6 and older. Reservations are required by calling 239-533-7440 or online at www.leeparks.org

Pine Needle Basket Making Class

Saturday, November 12th

9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m.

Make a basket from needles just in time for Thanksgiving. Participants will also learn collection and preparation techniques. All materials are provided. Class is $15 per person aged 12 and older. Reservations are required by calling 239-533-7440 or online at www.leeparks.org

Intro to Birding Walk (NEW)

Thursday, November 17th

9:00-11:00 a.m.

Learn about different birds that frequent the preserve. Discussion will include ways to identify birds by their physical characteristics, behavior and location. Wear comfortable shoes for walking, bring binoculars and water. Cost is $3 per person (adults only) and reservations are required by calling 239-533-7440 or online at www.leeparks.org

Tracking Club

Saturday, November 19th 10:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m.

Saturday, December 17th 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.

Join our Tracking Club as members learn about wildlife through their tracks. Reference for class is “The Science and Art of Tracking” by Tom Brown Jr. Bring a lunch. For more information or to RSVP please call (239) 533-7555.

Alligator Detectives Program

Saturday, December 3rd

11:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m.

Learn fun facts about Florida’s favorite reptile in this 1 hour program. Meet in the Interpretive Center at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 3rd. Reservations are not necessary. All ages are welcome and the program is free with your paid parking fee of $1 per hour per vehicle.

Native Plant Uses (NEW)

Tuesday, December 13th

10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m.

Discover the many uses of Florida’s native plants during this hands-on program. The fee is $3 per person (adults only). Reservations are required by calling 239-533-7440 or online at www.leeparks.org

The Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve is a beautiful Lee County Parks and Recreation wetland preserve with a raised boardwalk open to the public 7 days a week from dawn until dusk. The trail is fully accessible and consists of a of mile lower loop or the entire trail is 1.2 miles long. Visitors to this Lee County Parks and Recreation site will see examples of old Florida in the plants and animals that live there. This natural setting provides the perfect backdrop for Florida wildlife such as wading birds, turtles, alligators, otters, squirrels, woodpeckers, butterflies, dragonflies and more. Opportunities to see wildlife are plentiful whether walking out on the trail or sitting at a pond overlook.
