The Beach Town Council asked the County Commissioners to do an oversight review of the Library. Please look at the details and evaluate for yourself. The Friends of the Library have info at the front desk for your consideration. We received word that the request will be reviewed at the October 25 Board of County Commissioners meeting which starts at 9:30 a.m.
We really appreciate the many comments and gestures of good will received in recent weeks. We have known for a long, long time that the library is an important part of this community. Even those who are infrequent users of the library have shared their ideas from time to time of why the library is so important for our community.
Thank you for your comments, review of the facts as various issues are discussed, and for your support.
We have updated our webpage to make it easier to find information and also to share a fuller story of the library. We have in particular tried to put together options so that only a click or two (or at most three) are needed. If there are options you'd welcome seeing in the future, please feel free to share your ideas.
You're likely noticing the growth of walls as the construction projects moves forward. The first wall of the parking area under the expansion has been poured, and progress is underway with the other two walls. Foundations and footings are in place with the final touches in development for the front wall and tower area. Rebar installation is also in progress.
This dream, which grew out of years of planning, is coming to happen, and I'm excited as I look at the additional options we will have in serving the public. The expansion should be finished in March/April 2012, at which time we will move into the expansion and begin the updating of the current library. That updating will take around four months and we'll be ready for the grand opening in August/September, 2012.
One of the challenges during construction is that we are remaining open during the entire process. This is no easy task, and one that the contractors, architects, and library staff need to keep building around. So far it's gone well, and we anticipate that will continue. Your understanding, acceptance of the minor adjustments, and overall good-will are appreciated. It is how we work together that the essence and joy of life are possible. Fault-finding makes the complainer crabby and the rest of us usually want to avoid that and often the "faults" are not in sync with the facts because of personal agendas. Offering suggestions and ideas are always welcome.
Library as Hub
Mayor Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans reminded a large crowd at the Ernest Morial Convention Center in June that the city recovered its vitality, in part, because it purposefully rebuilt with libraries as community hubs.
World War Buffs
World War II buffs interested in in-depth detail will relish "Graphic War: the secret aviation drawings and illustrations of WWII" (623.746 NIJ). It's large format picture book, half printed in color, is sure to be fascinating for aviation enthusiasts as well as those readers of world war literature that want to survey the impact of graphic art drawings.
"Shifty's War; the authorized biography of Sergeant Darrell "Shifty" Powers, the legendary sharpshooter from the Band of Brothers" (940.548 BRO) is a great read and filled with inspiring stories. This is a story about a person who didn't get recognition for what he did in the war but was a man of character and devotion.
Don't remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
