To the editor:
How much more can the Town do to upset the balance at the Mound House?
First, we lost the director and now volunteers are required to have a criminal background check??!!
Has anyone at Town Hall seen the list of Mound House volunteers? It reads like a "Who's Who" of Fort Myers Beach: a past mayor and his wife; a former council member and his wife; members of CELCAB; Directors of the "Friends of the Mound House" along with many long-term residents of FMB.
How insulting for all of us to now (after SO many years of volunteering at the Mound House) to be subjected to this. Will volunteers for the Film Festival, the Beach Clean-up, Bay Oaks and the Pirate Festival also be required to have background checks?
Not only was I appalled when I received the Background Check Release Form, I noticed that it was for EMPLOYEES of the Town, NOT volunteers and would include a financial background check. When I questioned this, the HR Dept of FMB admitted that it was the only form they had and that it would be replaced by a form specific to volunteers. Better late than never, I guess.
I have nothing to hide and want to continue to be a volunteer at Mound House. However, I think the Town is carrying things a bit too far, without any explanation as to why this is necessary.
