Construction
A billion seconds ago, Jimmy Carter was president, Pete Rose was playing for the Cincinnati Reds, John Paul II became pope, planning for the new county park behind Beach Elementary was beginning, the first Beach Library Librarian Emily Spencer died at age 70 and the new library addition was opening. It was a time of anticipation and excitement.
So much was happening this week construction-wise that it was a time to celebrate how far we’ve come and the grand days and opportunities ahead. Thank you for your patience during these months of growth and construction related moments. So much has happened in the billion seconds since 1978, and I look forward to the continuing progress. It is a time of anticipation and excitement.
Artist of the Month
Take time in your schedule to soak in the paintings of Pauline Healey. She says with a sense of pride, “I was born an artist,” but it’s said not with a sense of bragging (though she could rightly do that too) but with the excitement and joy she feels in painting. Talk with Pauline about painting and you learn that she’s currently concentrating on painting with oils and acrylics but still takes opportunities to try watercolor. She is so comfortable in painting that she doesn’t hesitate in setting up a work, nor undertake a project on very short order. Two of the exhibited paintings are ones she created for an open house setting.
One special quality of Pauline is her openness to the challenges, surprises and successes she experiences when creating. And that special quality is also evident in her readiness to also accepting the failures that accompany a creative endeavor, and she’s not shy about that–it’s just a part of life.
Historic
On display are artifacts and details of St. Raphael’s Church, historic church on the Beach. Through gifts and purchase, lots were acquired in Holiday Heights and the building, which still stands today on Williams Drive, was begun in 1953. One can gain an appreciation of the various events milestones of St. Raphael’s through the displayed items as well as a digital presentation that accompanies the display.
Featured in the display case near the DVDs is Polish Pottery. Stoneware started as a local folk art hundreds of years ago in the German Province of Silesia (nor part of Poland). The center of this traditional ceramic art is still centered around the village of Boleslaviec where skilled artists handicraft and decorate each piece. The Pottery on display is made possible from the collection of and through the kindness of Kristin Nenninger.
Library Hours
When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162, or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 to 5, and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
