Vintage Hats
There’s a special display on the first floor devoted to vintage hats made possible through the energy and creativity of Carrie Hill. One can see a great variety of hats from early 1910s to late 1950s. Included also are pre World War II white pearl purses and corde purses.
The hats are made from many different materials and are truly reflective of what seemed to attract interest during the various decades.
Libraries Are
Libraries are one of the last true commons in modern life, welcoming all who grace our doors. In celebrating and championing the right to read and freedom of access to information, we enable many to get a better command of resources that can aid in their life. Stewardship of the written record is integral to our mission and we devote many hours each week to seeking out those titles that will be benefit in the collection. Libraries don’t have a financial stake in the success of the publishing business but society has a cultural stake in the future of libraries.
Construction
You may notice that there are a variety of activities underway as we move closer to the pouring of the foundation. We are in our second week of waiting for the permit for the temporary stairs and ramp. Receiving the permit is taking longer than expected. Conduits for underground utilities was started this week.
We are making a few changes in relocating the New Non-Fiction titles and Florida collection. This is in preparation for a wall that will be constructed on the second floor, so that the expansion can be connected to the current facility without having to do any demolition when the expansion is completed. It makes much more sense to do the prep work now as it facilitates the seamless combining of the two buildings and can be done now when there is plenty of room to maneuver outside without any obstructions.
Magazines
We find that many residents like to spend time at the library reading magazines during the summer. We have print subscriptions that arrive every day there is mail delivery. David McDonald, of True North Custom Media, wrote in the February 2011 issue of Folio that “year after year magazine readership continues to grow,” noting that “magazine readership has increased for the past five years–right through the recession.” We relate to that, finding a similar experience.
McDonald also noted that 4 out of 5 adults read magazines, that adults under 35 read the most “despite the abundance of new media alternatives,” and 90 percent of magazine subscribers prefer the printed format over using an electronic reader.
Library Hours
Don’t remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5, and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
