Scouting to get its own stamp

By Staff | Jul 31, 2010

Mayor John Sullivan will proclaim Saturday, Aug. 7 as “Scouting Day,” along with a dedication event from the Cape Coral Central Post Office for the Scouting stamp.
“Pretty cool thing for the boys,” Assistant Scout Master for Troop 4 and Den Leader for the Pack 4 Dawn Stermer-Pfister said about the dedication. “I am pretty happy they are going to be honored in that way.”
The 44-cent scouting postage stamp was issued by the U.S. Postal Service to recognize the 100th birthday of scouting. The stamp, which was designed by Derry Noyes of Washington, D.C., is a commemorative stamp that has one design in a pressure-sensitive pane of 20 stamps. There was 40 million scouting stamps printed.
Stermer-Pfister said scouting has been apart of her life since she was little.
She said the pack, which is the oldest in Lee County, is celebrating its30th birthday. The troop, which was first established in 1967, has only been reinstated for 23 years.
USPS Customer Relations Coordinator Debra Mitchell said she was approached by Dawn to host a special scouting event at the post office.
“She called me up and wanted to know if we could team up and do an event that would promote scouting,” she said. “When she called, I was thrilled because my brother was an Eagle Scout and I was a scout.”
Stermer-Pfister said the event is all about the boys.
“It is so exciting that they are going to be recognized and show the community what scouting is all about and who they are and why our unit has been able to survive,” she said. “It is a great way to get out there and show the community” what we are all about.
The free event, which will take place form 10 a.m. until noon, will feature a flag raising ceremony, along with a stamp dedication and presentation to the Cape Coral scouting unit four by the postmaster.
“The boys will raise the flags,” Stermer-Pfister said.
Mitchell said there will also be demonstrations of some of the things that scouting involves, along with a sample campfire cooking S’mores and Dutch Oven cobblers.
Mitchell said she is a big fan of scouting, “especially for kids today because there is so much out there that is not good.”
“I hope that the families can get out,” Mitchell said. “We are doing it on a Saturday to get more families out there.”
She said there is no expense to the postal service for this event, due to the scouts buying all the materials they need.
“You can’t ask for anything better than that,” she said.
There are a little more than 50 registered boys for the pack and little more than 30 boys for the troop, Stermer-Pfister said.
She is hoping to have at least a half a dozen boys from the troop and pack present at the event on Saturday.
“It should be a fun time,” Stermer-Pfister said.
The post office is at 1030 S.E. 9th Avenue in Cape Coral.
