Save the Manatee Club

February 3, 2010
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

The manatee's story is a heart-breaking one. Although manatees have been peacefully swimming in Florida's waters for over a million years, human activities have put them at a high risk of extinction. Collisions with boats are the number one cause of manatee deaths and the greatest threat to their long-term survival. Last year was the worst ever for manatees -- records were broken -- 429 manatees died -- 97 of them killed by boats.

Recently, biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's research institute documented 107 dead manatees in Florida waters from Jan. 1-23. Seventy-seven of those deaths were due to cold stress from a cold snap that gripped the state for nearly two weeks in January.

Please join our life-saving efforts to help the endangered manatees.

Funds from the Adopt-A-Manatee program go toward efforts to help protect manatees and their habitat.

Save the Manatee Club was founded by Jimmy Buffett, world-renowned singer/songwriter, and former Governor of Florida and U.S. Senator Bob Graham, in 1981. The Club is a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) membership-based organization.

Your help is greatly appreciated!
