The Mermaid opens for business

July 31, 2009

After months of anticipation from passers by and the owners themselves, the Mermaid Lounge and Liquor Store is finally open for business, first welcoming visitors with a soft opening last Thursday.

"We got a call at 5 p.m. Wednesday saying we had all permits, so we decided to open the next day," said Kathy VanSelow, co-owner of the Mermaid, along with her husband, Scott, and daughter, Valerie. "We're so happy to finally be open for business. It's such a great feeling."

The building the Mermaid encompasses was originally known as the Surf Club, Kathy's brother-in-law Bruce Cermak's bar, which will be opening in the old Waffle House building, across from the new lounge.

Kathy, Scott and Valerie VanSelow have come together to open up the all-new Mermaid Lounge and Liquor Store at 1204 Estero Blvd., where the original Surf Club once stood. The family gave the building a complete overhaul from floor to ceiling, offering happy hour specials Monday to Friday, along with plenty of drink specials throughout the week. "We've renovated almost everything from floor to ceiling," Kathy said.

The building had a complete overhaul, including a new ocean-painted floor, bar and restroom fixtures, as well as all-new plumbing and more.

The Mermaid offers a happy hour every weekday, from 4 to 7 p.m., consisting of $2.50 domestics, $3 wines and wells and $3.25 imports.

And, along with happy hour, drink specials will be offered Monday through Friday, from noon to 4 p.m., and all day Saturday, from noon to 6 p.m.. They might be margaritas one day. They might be mimosas another. Depending on the day and what the staff is up for, you just never know what special will be offered.

Of course, "Church" will still be held every Sunday, from 9 a.m. to noon, where "church-goers" can enjoy blood marys for just $1.

Enjoy some snacks like beef jerky and chips while in the lounge, and smoking is permitted.

If in the mood to just pick up a 12-pack and head back to the house, the liquor store side of the lounge is equipped with plenty of beer, liquor and wine of all sorts, with Kathy and the gang adding more and more to the collection every day.

Lotto and lottery tickets are available for purchase to test your luck in the lounge as well, and all major credit cards are accepted (except AmEx), Kathy said.

"We're absolutely excited to be open on the beach," she said. "We love the Beach and the people on the Beach."

Hours to the all-new Mermaid Lounge and Liquors are 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week, including the liquor store side. For more info, stop by the lounge or call 765-9100.
